I will not quibble with the other two reviewers but instead point out two facts relative to the discussion:1) They claim that the book is in a sense immoral because Mommsen would never have wanted it published. The same could be said of “The Aeneid” (which Virgil on his deathbed ordered to be destroyed) and the works of Kafka (which he ordered his friend Max Brod to destroy).2) The volume is unacceptable because it consists of notes of Mommsen’s lectures written down by his students. This is apparently a heinous crime to the two previous reviewers, who ignore the fact that much of Wittgenstein has come down to us this way, not to mention pretty much the entire works of Aristotle. So should you read it? If you’re interested in Roman History yes, with the large caveat that these are lecture notes and not a manuscript written or seen through the press by Mommsen himself. Caveat Emptor.
